Cloves, Whole
The word “clove” is from the Latin word for nail – clavus, since the whole clove resembles a small nail. Cloves are the unopened flower buds of a tropical tree native to Indonesia. Very pungent and aromatic. Whole cloves add a wonderful flavor to ham or pork when “studded” into the meat before baking. Also use to enhance the flavor of wild game; or mix with orange peel, cinnamon pieces, and allspice to make a fantastic mulling spice.
